Be Real. Not Perfect.: Why Your Authenticity May Be More Powerful Than Your Polish

There is a version of you that you may have been trying to perfect before you let anybody see it.

You want to say the right thing. Look the right way. Have the right answer. Make sure the plan is complete. Make sure nobody can point out a flaw.

And while you're getting everything “just right,” you may be keeping people from experiencing something far more valuable than perfection:

You.

Today's Pocket Power Talk says:

“What the world needs is not a perfect version of you. It needs the real one.”
— Sheréa VéJauan Riley

That doesn't mean excellence doesn't matter. It does.

Prepare. Learn. Grow. Improve your skills. Correct what needs correcting. Give your work the attention it deserves.

But don't confuse excellence with perfection.

Excellence says, I'm going to give this my best.

Perfection says, I can't let anyone see this until there is nothing left to criticize.

And if that's your standard, you can stay hidden for a very long time.

Perfection Can Become a Hiding Place

Sometimes what we call preparation is really fear with a respectable name.

One more revision.

One more class.

One more piece of equipment.

One more certification.

One more month before you launch.

One more adjustment before you post.

There is always something else you could improve. And improvement is good—until improvement becomes the excuse that keeps you from beginning.

You don't have to know everything to share what you know.

You don't have to have completed the entire journey to speak honestly about the ground you've already covered.

You don't have to become the final version of yourself before the current version becomes useful.

There are people who don't need you ten years from now.

They need something you already know today.

Authenticity Creates Connection

Think about the people you trust.

Chances are, you don't trust them because they convinced you they have never made a mistake.

You trust them because something about them feels true.

There is congruence between what they say and how they show up.

That's authenticity.

Authenticity isn't telling everybody everything. Boundaries still matter. Privacy still matters. Wisdom still matters.

Being authentic doesn't require making your entire life public.

It means that what you do choose to show is real.

You don't pretend to know when you don't know.

You don't pretend something is easy when it's hard.

You don't manufacture an image simply because you think the image will receive more approval.

You show up honestly.

And honesty gives other people permission to exhale.

Someone hears you say, “I'm still figuring this out,” and suddenly they don't feel so far behind.

Someone watches you take an imperfect first step and realizes they can take theirs.

Someone sees you learning in public and finally understands that growth doesn't require perfection.

That's impact.

Don't Polish Away the Part People Need

There's an interesting tension when you're building something meaningful.

You naturally want to improve.

You want your business better. Your leadership better. Your communication better. Your content better. Your relationships better.

Keep improving.

But be careful that in the process of polishing your work, you don't polish the humanity out of it.

People connect with people.

They connect with truth.

They connect with the sentence that sounds like something they've thought privately.

They connect with the person who can say, “I don't have every answer, but here's what I've learned.”

That's not weakness.

That's credibility with humility.

And sometimes that is exactly what allows somebody to hear you.

You Can Be a Work in Progress and Still Be Valuable

Maybe you've been telling yourself:

I'll start when I'm more confident.

I'll speak when I know more.

I'll apply when I'm more qualified.

I'll launch when everything looks professional.

I'll join when I feel like I belong.

But confidence often grows after you move.

Clarity often comes while you're moving.

Skill develops because you keep moving.

The polished version of you you're waiting for may only be created through the imperfect actions you're avoiding today.

So don't make perfection the admission price for participation in your own life.

Show up.

Learn.

Adjust.

Grow.

And keep going.

Where have you been holding yourself back because you don't feel polished enough yet?

What have you been postponing until you're more confident, more prepared, more experienced, or more certain?

And here's the bigger question:

What could become possible if you allowed the real version of you to show up today?

Not careless.

Not unprepared.

Not unwilling to grow.

Just real.
